Abel Jennings was the son of William Jennings and Barbara Thorpe.

Abel was born on Monday 20 December 1830 in Rothwell, Leeds, Yorkshire.

He was christened on Sunday 6 February 1831 at St Peter's Church, Leeds, Yorkshire.

Abel married Elizabeth Bedford in 1853 in the Hunslet Registration District.

He had the following children from his marriage to Elizabeth Bedford:

- Thomas Jennings

- Emma Jennings

born on 18 January 1856 in Rothwell, Leeds, Yorkshire.

Abel was a Coal Miner, and later a Gardener.

Abel died when he was 63 years old, on Saturday 30 December 1893 in Methley, near Rothwell, Yorkshire.

Treasured memories of Abel of Methley died aged 63 years. Thy will be done. Also Elizabeth, his beloved wife, died aged 84 years. At Rest.

Abel is supposed to have died by drowning after a mining accident, for which he felt some responsibility, by throwing himself off Methley Bridge. At the Inquest, held at Mill Moor Tavern, Methley, on the body of Abel aged 70, who committed suicide on Saturday by throwing himself in the River Aire. He recently had an illness which left as brain infection, and since then his movements had to be carefully watched. On Saturday, he left the house to attend to the greenhouse fire and was seen to wander by the river. Body was found on Sunday. Deceased was one of the family of Jennings connected with the Great Jennens case which had long been a topic of conversation.
