David Anthony Phillips was the son of Claude Augustus (Gus) Phillips and Florence Whistance (Floss) Greenhough.

Anthony was born on Wednesday 6 June 1928.

He was christened on Sunday 1 July 1928 at St James Church, Wednesbury, Staffordshire.

Anthony married Jean Crossley on Sunday 21 January 1951.

He had the following children from his marriage to Jean Crossley:

- Christopher Charles Anthony Phillips	born on 25 August 1951.
- Rosalind Jeanne Marianne Phillips	born in 1953 (date suppressed).
- Caroline Patricia Ann Phillips	born in 1957 (date suppressed).
