Mary Ellen (Nellie) Sewell was the daughter of John Graham Sewell and Ann (Annie) Topham.

Nellie was born on Thursday 7 March 1895 in Rochdale, Lancashire.

Nellie married Wilfred Clegg in 1921 in the Rochdale Registration District, Lancashire (Jun. quarter).

She had the following children from her marriage to Wilfred Clegg:

- Constance A. (Connie) Clegg	born on 1 November 1922 in the Rochdale Registration District, Lancashire.
- Mildred Clegg	born in 1924 (date suppressed).
- Audrey Clegg	born in 1930 (date suppressed).
